City of Alexandria government offices and facilities are closed Tuesday, Feb. 9. Emergency services personnel should report as scheduled. Trash and recycling collection scheduled for Feb. 9 will not be collected until Feb. 16. DASH will be operating a Saturday schedule beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9th, with some route modifications. See the DASH Web site for details.
Alexandria remains under a State of Emergency. The City's top priority is ensuring emergency vehicle and public utility access to all City streets. More winter weather is on the way, and a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday evening. The current forecast states that 10 to 20 additional inches of snow is possible.
The City has launched SnowReport, an online map application that can be used to view how a particular road is prioritized and to submit reports electronically on snow removal concerns regarding primary and secondary routes. After the City plows and treats all primary and secondary routes, online reports will also be accepted for residential streets.
The heavy, wet snow has led to downed trees and power outages in the City. The City will remove fallen trees from City streets and sidewalks based upon emergency priority. Dominion crews are working to restore service to customers and has posted a detailed map of power outage locations for residents to view. If your power goes out, please report it to Dominion at 888-667-3000 (toll free). Due to power outages, many City signals are out and drivers should treat these intersections as a four-way stop.
Snow and cold temperatures usually force people indoors to keep warm, but the City reminds residents to take extra precautions to protect their home's safety during winter storms. Building codes address the amount of snow a roof should be designed to handle, and most newer homes are built to these codes, but older homes, especially those with flat roofs, may have been built under different codes and therefore present a greater risk of roof collapse.
The City has opened the Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street) and the William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Avenue) as warming locations for residents until further notice. Trash and recycling collection is cancelled on Monday, February 8, and Tuesday, February 9. Trash and recycling collection on these dates will be picked up the following week on Monday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 16.
